The Truth About Antidepressants - Sexual Health

Find out about the side effects of antidepressants and depression treatment. Learn what you can do about them.

If you are being treated for moderate to severe depression, a doctor or psychiatrist has probably prescribed an antidepressant medication for you. When they work properly, they help to relieve symptoms and, along with other approaches such as talk therapy, are an important part of treatment.
One way antidepressants work is by altering the balance of certain chemicals in your brain. And, as with all medicines, this change can cause side effects. Some, like jitteriness, weird dreams, dry mouth, and diarrhea typically go away after a week or two -- if they don’t, it’s probably best to switch to another drug. Others, like decreased sexual desire, may last longer.
Not everyone has the same side effects. And a particular antidepressant doesn’t cause the same side effects in all people. Many things, including your genetic makeup or existing health conditions, can affect the way you respond to taking an antidepressant.
It’s important to keep track of side effects and discuss them with your doctor. Together, you and your doctor can safely manage your antidepressants so they work with minimal side effects.

Common Side Effects of Antidepressants

Antidepressants can sometimes cause a wide range of unpleasant side effects, including:
  • nausea
  • increased appetite and weight gain
  • loss of sexual desire and other sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction and decreased orgasm
  • fatigue and drowsiness
  • insomnia
  • dry mouth
  • blurred vision
  • constipation
  • dizziness
  • agitation
  • irritability
  • anxiety

Antidepressants and Sexual Problems

One of the more common “though not frequently talked about” side effects is decreased interest in sex or decreased ability to have an orgasm. As many as half the patients who get SSRIs report a sex-related symptom, says Bradley N. Gaynes, MD, MPH, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina.
One way to address such symptoms is to add a different type of antidepressant or even a medication for erectile dysfunction, Gaynes says. But it’s also possible that switching to another antidepressant will make these symptoms go away. Never stop taking the antidepressant without discussing it with your doctor. Stopping abruptly could cause serious withdrawal-like problems.

Antidepressants and Weight

Another, less well-documented side effect of antidepressants is weight gain. Go on any health message board and you’ll read accounts of patients disturbed by the amount of weight they’ve gained -- or in a few cases, lost -- since going on an antidepressant.
One of the problems, says Gaynes, is knowing how much of the weight gain or loss can be attributed to the drug and how much can be attributed to other factors, such as a person’s normal behaviors around food.
Yet some reliable medical studies have shown that long-term use of antidepressants can raise the risk of weight gain and related illnesses -- type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
“Weight gain and loss of sexual interest and performance are the main things I hear about,” says Myrna Weissman, PhD, a clinician and epidemiologist at Columbia University. “The new drugs typically claim to have fewer side effects, but I don’t know that the data supports that. Sometimes there are pretty striking weight gains.”
Some studies and anecdotal evidence suggest that bupropion ( Wellbutrin), which works on both the serotonin and dopamine chemicals in the brain, may be less likely to cause weight gain than commonly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like citalopram ( Celexa), sertraline ( Zoloft), and paroxetine ( Paxil).

Antidepressants and Sleepiness

Certain antidepressants are more energizing, which may be right for someone who feels sleepy often. Other antidepressants tend to have drowsiness as a side effect, which may be good for people who are often anxious.
For example, drugs like mirtazapine ( Remeron), which can cause weight gain and sleepiness, may be the right drug for patients who have trouble sleeping, or gaining weight.
If you feel sleepy on your antidepressant, talk to your doctor. You have many options.

Antidepressants, Talk Therapy, and Challenges

In addition to physical symptoms, recovering patients may experience new challenges as the wool of depression is pulled from over their hearts and eyes.
“People sometimes get worse in therapy before they get better,” says Gabrielle Melin, MD, clinical psychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. “Talk therapy takes work. It takes emotional energy. It can be physically draining, too. But sometimes you’ll feel worse in the process of getting to where you want to be and who you want to be.

Antidepressants, Talk Therapy, and Challenges continued...

“ Depression can mask a lot of things. You get so wrapped in a fog and feel so awful that you don’t have the energy to deal with real problems. Sometimes depression is self-protective because it limits the energy you have to go to certain places.”
To a lesser extent, even taking a pill can create an environment of new stresses. “You’re feeling better, more aware, more focused – sometimes you’re more able to recognize things you were doing wrong,” says Melin. “Your attention and focus can be profoundly affected.”
When her patients feel better, Melin says, she may encourage them to work on feelings and behaviors in talk therapy. If a drug helps a patient lift the veil of listlessness and hopelessness, he or she will have more energy to work on fixing problems in life and relationships.

What About the Risk of Suicide on Antidepressants?

Many people have heard about the suicide warnings that the Food and Drug Administration ordered antidepressant manufacturers to post on their package inserts. The package inserts note that children, adolescents, and young adults with major depression or other psychiatric disorder who take antidepressants may be at increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior, especially during the first month of treatment. They should be monitored carefully.
No increased risk has been seen in older adult patients. And if you are over the age of 65, you may actually have less risk of suicide when taking antidepressants.
Having suicidal thoughts while taking an antidepressant is a serious side effect. It needs the attention of your doctor as soon as possible. Please don’t try to deal with those feelings alone.
Remember, most people with depression get better. You may need to try a few different antidepressants to find the right one for you. And getting talk therapy at the same time is the most effective treatment for depression, studies show. Work closely with your doctor, and give your treatment time to succeed.

13 Sex-Drive Killers You Must Know - Sexual Health Tips

Sex-Drive Killer: Lack of Closeness

Sex without feeling close can slay desire. Intimacy is more than just sex. If your sex life is idling, try spending morenon-sexual time together, just the two of you. Talk, snuggle, trade massages. Find ways to express love without having sex. Getting closer can rebuild your sex drive.

Sex-Drive Killer: Menopause

For many women, sex drive dims around menopause. That's partly about symptoms such as vaginal dryness and pain during sex. But every woman is different, and it's possible to have a great sex life after menopause by tending to your relationship, self esteem, and overall health.

Sex-Drive Killer: Depression

Being depressed can shut off pleasure in many things, including sex. That's one of many reasons to get help. If your treatment involves medication, tell your doctor if your sex drive is low, since some (but not all) depression drugs lower sex drive. Talk about it with your therapist, too.

Sex-Drive Killer: Low T

The "T" hormone, testosterone, fuels sex drive. As men age, their T levels may drop a bit. Not all lose the desire for sex as this happens, but some do. Many other things -- from relationships to weight -- also affect a man's sex drive and testosterone levels, so there's not a one-size-fits-all answer for every man.

Sex-Drive Killer: Erection Problems

Men with ED (erectile dysfunction) often worry about how they will be able to perform sexually, and that worry can drain their desire. ED can be treated, and couples can also work to keep it from affecting their relationship.

Sex-Drive Killer: Obesity

When you're overweight or obese, desire often dims. It could be that you don't enjoy sex, can't perform like you want to, or are held back by low self-esteem. Working on how you feel about yourself, with a counselor if needed, may make a big difference.

Sex Drive Killer: Poor Body Image

Feeling sexy is easier if you like how you look. Work on accepting your body as it is today, even if you're working to get in shape. Feeling good about yourself can put you in the mood. If your partner has low esteem, assure them that they're sexy.

Sex-Drive Killer: Medication

Some drugs can turn down desire. They include some of these types of medications:
  • Antidepressants
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Birth control pills (some studies show a link; others don't)
  • Chemotherapy

Sex-Drive Killer: Having Kids

You don't lose your sex drive once you're a parent. However, you do lose some time to be close with kids under foot. Hire a babysitter to nurture some time to be partners as well as parents. New baby? Try sex during baby's nap time.

Sex-Drive Killer: Too Little Sleep

If your sexual get-up-and-go is gone, maybe you're not getting enough sleep. Do you go to bed too late or rise too early? Do you have a sleep problem like trouble falling or staying asleep, or a condition such as sleep apnea? Anything that messes with a good night's rest can mess with sex. Fatigue saps sexy feelings. Work on your sleep habits, and if that doesn't help, talk to your doctor.

Sex-Drive Killer: Alcohol

A drink may make you feel more open to sex. But too much alcohol can numb your sex drive. Being drunk can also be a turn-off for your partner. If you have trouble drinking less, seek help.

Sex-Drive Killer: Partner Problems

Problems with your partner are among the top sex-drive killers. For women, feeling close is a major part of desire. For both sexes, watch for fallout from fights, poor communication, feeling betrayed, or other trust issues. If it's tricky to get back on track, reach out to a couples counselor.

Sex-Drive Killer: Stress

Some people do many things well when they're stressed. Feeling sexy usually isn't one of them. Stress at work, home, or in relationships can happen to anyone. Learning how to handle it in a healthy way really helps. You can do a lot of it yourself, and a counselor or doctor can also help.

7 Sex Mistakes Men Make - Sexual Health Guide

Men: A change in thinking may improve your sex life. Get the details on seven common mistakes guys make with women, and learn how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Sex Starts in the Bedroom

Men may turn on like a light, but for women, arousal doesn’t happen so fast, says sex therapist Ian Kerner, PhD.
Pave the way during the day by hugging, kissing, and holding hands. Have some fun together, and show you appreciate her.
Feeling safe and secure in the relationship is key for a woman to really let loose during sex, Kerner says. A long hug can go further than you’d think. “Hugging for 30 seconds stimulates oxytocin, the hormone in women that creates [a] sense of connection and trust.”

Mistake 2: Assume You Know What She Wants

“Just as many women are faking orgasm today as 20 or 30 years ago,” Kerner says. So, if she’s not enjoying herself, you might not know it.
Don't be afraid to ask questions like “How does this feel?” or “Do you want something different?”
In other words, ask for directions.

Mistake 3: Stick to Your Plan

Don't think that "if it worked the first three times, it will work the next three times," says sex therapist Sari Cooper, LCSW.
What turns her on may depend on her mood, and where she is in her monthly cycle. “Perhaps her nipples are more sensitive or her genitals are less tingly,” Cooper adds.
Pay attention to your partner, says psychologist Lonnie Barbach, PhD. “Try different things and she how she responds.”
When you find something that works, linger on it. Women often complain that men move on to the next thing just as they really start to enjoy an activity.

Mistake 4: Keep It Strictly Physical

Expand your idea of foreplay. Some men "focus on physical stimulation and often ignore mental stimulation,” Kerner says.
While men get stirred up by what they see, “women fantasize a lot during sex as part of [the] process of arousal.” Join in -- share a fantasy or a sexy memory.

Mistake 5: Expect Intercourse to Give Her an Orgasm

For 80% of women, intercourse alone won’t do the trick. Why not? Most sex positions don’t directly stimulate the clitoris.
There are other ways to pleasure her. “Women orgasm much more consistently from oral sex than from intercourse,” Kerner says. Also, try sex with the woman on top, or a vibrator made for couples to use during sex. “Men should feel comfortable, not threatened, with sex toys,” he says.
To help her hit the high note when you do have sex, take time to get her going before you make your entrance. “The closer women are when they start intercourse, the more likely they are to have an orgasm,” Barbach says.

Mistake 6: Skip the Seduction

Women like to be seduced. "Seduction is as important as, or sometimes more important than, technique,” Cooper says.
It helps to know what kind of turn-on your partner likes, whether it’s oral, visual, or mental, she says. “Does your partner like it when you talk dirty over the phone or text? Trace your finger slowly up her chest? Flirt with her at a bar?”
Also, if you like what you see, say so. "Let a woman know how desirable she is,” Barbach says.

Mistake 7: Focus on Ringing the Bell

Most women need clitoral stimulation to have an orgasm, but it's more complex than you may think.
Some men "don’t understand the anatomy of the clitoris,” Cooper says. It’s more than the small "button" you can see. Its nerve endings spread throughout the vulva and inside the vagina. All are potential pleasure points worth exploring.
“You can go back and forth,” Cooper says. Paying too much attention to the glans, at the top of the vulva, can take away from pleasure for some women. It's so sensitive, that too much stimulation can hurt.

Can You Boost Low Testosterone Naturally? Yes You Can

If you're looking for ways to boost your testosterone level, start by looking at your daily habits. "I never prescribe testosterone alone without talking to men about their lifestyle," says Martin Miner, MD, co-director of the Men's Health Center at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I.
Some changes that are good for your overall health could also provide benefits in helping to maintain a healthy level of this important male hormone.

1. Get Enough Sleep.

George Yu, MD, a urology professor at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., says that, for many men with low testosterone, poor sleep is the most important factor. A lack of sleep affects a variety of hormones and chemicals in your body. This, in turn, can have a harmful impact on your testosterone.
Make sleep a priority, aiming for 7 to 8 hours per night, even if it means rearranging your schedule or dropping your habit of late-night TV. Prize your sleep, just like you'd prize a healthy diet and active lifestyle. It's that important.
If you're having problems getting good sleep on a regular basis, talk to your doctor.

2. Keep a Healthy Weight.

Men who are overweight or obese often have low testosterone levels, says Alvin M. Matsumoto, MD, of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.
For those men, losing the extra weight can help bring testosterone back up, he says. Likewise, for men who are underweight, getting your weight up to a healthy level can also have a positive effect on the hormone.

3. Stay Active.

Testosterone adapts to your body's needs, Yu says. If you spend most of your time lying on the couch, your brain gets the message that you don't need as much to bolster your muscles and bones.
But, he says, when you're physically active, your brain sends out the signal for more of the hormone.
If you're getting little exercise now, Miner suggests starting by:
  • Walking briskly at least 10 to 20 minutes a day.
  • Building strength with several sessions of weights or elastic bands each week. Work with a trainer to learn proper form so you don't injure yourself.
Don't go overboard. Extreme amounts of endurance exercise --working out at the level of elite athletes -- can lower your testosterone.

4. Take Control of Your Stress.

If you're under constant stress, your body will churn out a steady stream of the stress hormone cortisol. When it does, it will be less able to create testosterone. So, controlling your stress is important for keeping up your testosterone, Miner says.
Miner's advice to the over-stressed men he sees in his office is to:
  • Cut back on long work hours. If you're logging lots of overtime, try to whittle your workday down to 10 hours or less.
  • Spend 2 hours a day on activities you like that aren't work- or exercise-related, such as reading or playing music.

5. Review Your Medications.

Some medicines can cause a drop in your testosterone level, Matsumoto says. These include:
  • Opioid drugs such as fentanyl, MS Contin, and OxyContin
  • Glucocorticoid drugs such as prednisone
  • Anabolic steroids used for building muscles and improving athletic performance
You shouldn’t stop taking any of your medications. If you're concerned about your testosterone level, discuss your medications with your doctor to make sure they're not the problem, and to make adjustments to your treatment if needed.

6. Forget the Supplements.

Finally, although you're likely to encounter online ads for testosterone-boosting supplements, you aren't likely to find any that will do much good.
Your body naturally makes a hormone called DHEA that it can convert to testosterone. DHEA is also available in supplement form. But neither Miner nor Matsumoto advise using DHEA supplements since, they say, they will do little to raise your testosterone.

7 Ways To Boost Testosterone & Sex Drive Naturally

Do you find yourself too busy, too tired, or too distracted for sex? Or does your drive just not seem to be there like it used to?

Testosterone is not responsible for libido alone. Especially for women, desire stems from a much more complicated set of hormonal and emotional interactions. But for men, while testosterone is not the whole story, it does play a leading role and the modern lifestyle may be your T’s worst enemy.

There is a new syndrome called Irritable Male Syndrome, or IMS, that's due to testosterone deficiency. It goes beyond low libido, and includes emotional withdrawal, lack of motivation, aggression, personality changes, and anxiety. It can also present as self-destructive behaviors like gambling, alcoholism and workaholism.

If this sounds like you or your man, you're not alone. Low testosterone affects at least 13.8 million men, with a significant number of those being men in their 30s.

11 Natural Ways to Boost Testosterone

Testosterone is a male sex hormone that regulates sexual drive in men and also plays a key role in other bodily functions like metabolism, bone density, level of red blood cells in the body and more. This hormone is primarily produced by the testicles and low testosterone levels hugely affect the well-being of men. Excessive exposure to chemicals and modern lifestyle cause low-T level. Usually, testosterone level decreases in a man once he crosses 30 years of age. The symptoms for this include lack of body hair, erectile dysfunction, breast growth and tiredness.

Medical conditions such as hypogonadism and even obesity can cause low-T in men. In some cases, the low-T is also caused due to lung diseases and type 2 diabetes. Doctors and leading experts suggest that one should look for natural ways to boost testosterone. If you also want to increase your testosterone levels, then following are some useful tips.

5 Natural Testosterone Boosters - Health Tips

Testosterone Basics
The hormone testosterone plays an important role in men’s health. For starters, it helps to maintain muscle mass, bone density, and sex drive. Testosterone production is at its highest in a man’s early adulthood and drops a little bit each year thereafter.
When the body doesn’t produce the right amount of testosterone, the condition is called hypogonadism. Sometimes it’s called “low T” as well. Men diagnosed with hypogonadism can benefit from testosterone therapy. Therapy isn’t usually recommended, however, if your testosterone levels fall within the normal range for your age.
There’s no magic solution for boosting your testosterone, but some natural remedies may help.
